This paper aims to complement the shortcomings of previous studies by examining the existence of cultural invasion in general, namely by selecting specific communities, in this case, the Ponorogo Regency, for the use of regional languages and social media as the focus of the discussion. This paper is based on the argument that the cultural invasion also penetrated the regional languages as part of the culture with the means of shifting, namely on social media. Through a survey method conducted on the people of Ponorogo Regency to fill out a questionnaire about the use of language on social media, it was found that the respondents actively used social media consisting of social networking, namely Facebook and Twitter, photo sharing, namely Instagram, and interactive media, namely TikTok. This data collection was carried out within three months, from July to September 2022. All respondents used social media to use Indonesian and foreign languages. Of all the respondents, apart from using this language, 28 respondents also used Javanese. Another 72 respondents only use Indonesian and foreign languages when surfing social media. However, compared to foreign languages, the number of Javanese users on social media is still more significant. This shows that cultural invasion did occur in Ponorogo, namely with the Javanese language, which experienced a shift from the primary language in communication because more people used Indonesian as the national language. In addition, the increasing use of foreign languages in social media shows symptoms of an even greater cultural invasion.

  • Rina Ari Rohmah

This study examines the dynamics of Indonesian language use on social media through a meta-analysis of relevant literature. Social media serves as a dynamic communication platform, influencing language use in terms of form, meaning, and politeness. The findings reveal an increasing use of slang, code-switching between Indonesian and foreign languages, and frequent language errors, particularly among the younger generation. This phenomenon poses a threat to the preservation of Indonesian as a national identity. However, social media also provides opportunities to promote proper language use through educational campaigns and the utilization of digital platforms for learning. Therefore, balancing language preservation and adapting to global trends is crucial. This study recommends collaboration among educational institutions, policymakers, and communities to raise awareness about proper Indonesian language use in the digital era.

This study was conducted to explain the phenomenon of the use of diglossia language which still often occurs in the learning environment. Thus, in order to provide a solution to these symptoms, it is necessary to first explain the phenomena that occur or are behind them. The phenomenon in the use of diglossia language occurs because of the process of cultural mixing in the use of language and the dualistic attitude shown by Indonesian language teachers, especially Indonesian language teachers at the Junior High School of Cilegon City. Based on the research that has been done, it was found that teachers have been stuck between following the rules of language or getting closer to students by ignoring the rules of language. It is known that today's students are very thick in the use of language that is influenced by the media, what they see on television, or social media. So that this phenomenon goes unnoticed by teachers and students in the learning process. The results of the study were found by using a phenomenological approach that focuses on the object of study on the situation or phenomenon behind it.

  • Aug 28, 2019

  • Erna Andriyanti

It is not uncommon for language to play an important role in identity issues in multilingual countries. Declaring one of the important community languages as the official language in such a country can pose a threat to the survival of the other languages. Bahasa Indonesia is an example of this phenomenon. Its successful establishment as the national language has altered the local language situation throughout the country. Relevant to this study, it has had an important effect on young people’s use of Javanese, the dominant local language of Yogyakarta. This study analyses the extent of language shift among the young multilinguals in the city and investigates the youth’s search for authentic local and national identities. A questionnaire was used to elicit the youth’s mother tongue as well as their attitudes and perceptions towards Javanese and Bahasa Indonesia and local and national identities. Their real use of languages was obtained through non-participative observations. A sample group of 1,039 students from 10 junior and senior high schools was surveyed. The findings reveal the current status of Javanese and Bahasa Indonesia as mother tongues and the identity-language choice links. Most young people with Javanese parents claimed that Bahasa Indonesia is their first language. This signals a weakened intergenerational transmission of Javanese. With regard to identity, the youth’s sense of national identity is stronger than their sense of local identity. To elevate the vitality of Javanese and strengthen the local identity, intergenerational transmission and intensive use of Javanese at school is imperative. Keywords:

  • Munira Hasjim + 5 more

Social media, with its advantages and disadvantages, has had a significant impact on the use of the Indonesian language, particularly among teenagers. Social media has shaped and transformed the way society communicates in Indonesian in daily life. The method used to analyze this issue is qualitative descriptive. Data collection techniques include screenshots to capture language usage phenomena on social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter (X), along with note-taking and documentation techniques. The research findings show that teenagers on social media employ linguistic aspects such as code-mixing, the use of informal language, phonetic reduplication and spelling variations, the use of acronyms and abbreviations, as well as emotional markers and symbols. The impact of social media on the Indonesian language includes vocabulary enrichment, degradation of language structure, maintenance of social and group identities, shifts in communication styles, and influences on the sustainability of standard language. Efforts to preserve the Indonesian language can be made through the government's role in drafting policies and regulations that support language preservation in the digital era, educational institutions by adjusting the Indonesian language curriculum to the times, active societal campaigns promoting proper Indonesian usage on social media, and individual awareness and responsibility for using correct Indonesian in social media communication.

This paper aims to demonstrate studies of pragmatic particles in Indonesian vernacular languages. Given the fact that Indonesia ranked second most populated language in the world after New Guinea, we would expect a huge number of studies discussing Indonesian local languages. Review to studies of pragmatic particles in Indonesian language is therefore considered salient to carry out to shed light on how different authors examine different particles, what kind of method they employ to describe meaning and functions, and what potential implication this study could contribute in this field. Besides, it also enriches the cross-linguistic study of pragmatic particles in general. Following Macaro et al’s. (2017) guideline of systematic review, this study employed linear process of procedure by deciding keywords, screening title, reviewing abstract, examining full text, and drawing conclusion. The corpus of pragmatic particles employed in reviewed studies ranges from colloquial, spoken, dialogue, and monologue data. Some approaches were used to reveal the pragmatic meanings, such as conversation analysis approach, pragmatics, morpho-syntactic, and even phonological approach. This discussion in the present paper may be fruitful for researchers who are working on pragmatic particles or vernacular languages and suggests that more studies in local languages should be outstripped to sustain national linguistic identity in the global arena. Penggunaan Bahasa Indonesia oleh Generasi Muda Malaysia di Media Sosial dan Dampaknya terhadap Bahasa Melayu: Sebuah Analisis Wacana Kritis

  • Saiyidinal Firdaus

In the era of globalization and the development of digital technology, cross-cultural and cross-linguistic interactions are intensifying, particularly among the younger generation. Social media has become a new space for shifting linguistic practices that reflect the dynamics of identity and power. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of the use of Bahasa Indonesia by Malaysian youth on social media and its impact on Malay through the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach of Norman Fairclough's model. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study design, which examines data in the form of social media content and news articles related to changes in language use in online interactions of Malaysian youth. The results of the study indicate a significant shift in language use patterns, where Bahasa Indonesia, especially informal and slang varieties, are increasingly used in online communication, replacing the role of Malay in informal contexts. This process is influenced by exposure to social media and cross-border entertainment content, which creates a hybrid form of communication between the two languages. From a CDA perspective, this phenomenon illustrates the power and ideological relationship between Bahasa Indonesia and Malay, where Bahasa Indonesia is considered dominant in the digital realm, while Malay struggles to maintain its identity as the national language. These findings emphasize the need for a language policy that can balance the preservation of Malay with openness to the influence of other languages, and support the development of dynamic linguistic identities in the context of globalization.

Language choice, language mixing and language attitudes : Indonesians in Australia
  • Nov 14, 2019
  • Bahren Umar Siregar

The thesis is about language choice, language mixing and language attitudes among Indonesian bilinguals in Australia. It is argued here that each of these features of bilingual behaviour can reveal the language maintenance situation in the Indonesian speech community, i.e. either active or passive language maintenance. The location of bilingualism investigated for language choice behaviour is the family domain. Language choice patterns in this domain have revealed that ingroup languages such as Bahasa Indonesia (BI) or the ethnic vernacular are functionally very dominant in the spouse-spouse role relationship. English is used predominantly between siblings, while other family role relationships have been characterized by language use ranging from BI to BI/English mixing and to English.[...]
