Abstract

The decay of the metastable 1s 5 state has been measured in the afterglow of a pulsed DC discharge in argon, krypton and xenon at temperatures between 200 and 400 K by monitoring the VUV radiation. The diffusion coefficient of this metastable state, in cm 2 s −1 at 1 Torr, has been determined as D m(Ar) = 3.20 (±0.25) × 10 −3 T 1.68(±0.04), D m(Kr) = 6.00 (±0.60) × 10 −3 T 1.46 (±0.05), D m(Xe) = 1.36 (±0.10) × 10 −3 T 1.65 (±0.04). The collision diameter of the metastable 1s 5 state has also been calculated using a classical rigid sphere model.
