Abstract

The Averroist school of thought in the Jewish medieval Spain was accused to be one of the major contributors to the mass conversion of the Spanish Jewish community. This article tries for the first time to analyze the opinion of two of the major averroists Spanish Jewish philosophers. The first part of the article examines the opinion of the Rabbi Isaac Albalag. According to this philosopher, there is no superiority and inferiority with respect to different religions, especially between Judaism and Christianity. This opinion is completely different from the position of the second philosopher Rabbi Isaac Pulgar, who claimed the immorality of Christianity (that is the reason of the earthly success of Christianity) and the sole morality of Judaism. In the last part of this article, I try to explain the difference between these two authors by the conversion to Christianity of another Jewish Averroist, Abner of Burgos.
