Abstract

Since writing this paper I have been awarded a Guggenheim fellowship that will enable me to return to Ladeiras, Brazil in order to continue the research on child mortality and to begin writing a monograph entitled Mother Love and Child Death i n Northeast Brazil. All five of us have decided to return to Brazil, although Sarah and Nate will return home with my husband, Michael, after the summer months. Jennifer, my eldest daughter, has decided to postpone entering college in the fall of 1987 in order to remain in Brazil with me for the duration of the research project as my field assistant. All three of the children are enthusiastic about the return to Brazil and are somewhat dismissive of their previous difficulties. I remain guarded on the prognosis.
