Abstract

Pregnancy involves a state of mild maternal systemic inflammation, in which the placenta produces a variety of immunomodulatory hormones and pro-inflammatory cytokines. In contrast, many secondary metabolites from food are capable of providing some anti-inflammatory activity, thus promoting homeostasis. In order to find out the relationship between the pro-inflammatory diet and the adverse perinatal outcome, the present systematic review was carried out, in which 7 studies were included following the method recommended in the Cochrane guidelines. As main result, some association was found between the inflammatory index of the diet and C-reactive protein in the second trimester, low birth weight or newborns small for gestational age and lack of statistically significant association with preeclampsia, gestational diabetes or preterm delivery. The need to expand the studies is concluded to better understand the metabolic processes intrinsic to proinflammatory eating behaviors.
