Abstract

The famous spouted limestone ewer with high relief decoration from Uruk/Eanna (W 14806g3/IM 19169) is conventionally dated to the so-called Jemdet Nasr Period. A new investigation concerning the stratigraphical position of the find-spot, as well as the theme and style of the sculptural representation, and – most important – the shape of the vessel itself, helps to demonstrate that the stone vase must belong to the beginning of the Early Dynastic Period (ED I).
