Abstract

The living area of the workmen from Deir el-Medina was limited by the ‘5 walls’/guard posts, the location of which has not yet been demonstrated. The expression sš/snj t3 5 jnb.t ‘passing the 5 walls/guard posts' opens up the possibility of determining five spots in Western Thebes which allow the complete separation of the royal necropolis of the New Kingdom. This was the main function of the ‘5 walls’/guard posts. A list of the known attestations of the ‘5 walls’/guard posts is provided in the appendix.
