Abstract

Summary 1. The formation of coenzyme A-thiolesters of differently substituted cinnamic acids was studied with enzyme extracts from anthers of Narcissus, Lilium and Tulipa . In all three objects the activity of the ligase develops during the meiosis. The activity reaches its maximum after the remove of the callose and decreases thereafter. — In the system of the Tulipa -anther the enzyme activity increases again during the late phase of the development of anthers. The activity of the acetat: CoA ligase shows no remarkable fluctuation during the development of the anthers. 2. The activity of the phenylalanine ammonium-lyase and of the p-coumarate: CoA ligase were correlated to each other. In anthers of Narcissus the activities of the PAL and of the p-coumarate: CoA ligase reach their maximum in the same stage of development. On the contrary in the anthers of Lilium and Tulipa the highest activity of ligase and PAL does not occur at the same time. 3. In cell-free extracts of anthers from Narcissus, Lilium , and Tulipa p-coumaric, caffeic, and ferulic acid are activated well. Cinnamic-acid, iso-ferulic, and sinapic acid could not be activated. 4. In anthers of Lilium the course of the activity of coenzyme-A ligase is correlated well to the accumulation of 2′-, 4-, 4′-, 6′-tetrahydroxychalcone which occurs in definite stages of the development of the anthers. The intensive accumulation starts in the stage of highest activity of the p-coumarate: CoA ligase. In the system of the Tulipa anther the formation of the 2′-, 3-, 4-, 4′-, 6′-pentahydroxy-chalcone starts in the stage of highest activity of the ligase. The intensive accumulation of chalcone occurs in a later stage of development after the decrease of the ligase activity.
