Abstract

Abstract Diane Arbus's career as a photographer began when her husband Allan Arbus bought her a 2¼ × 3¼-inch Graflex camera as a gift around 1943. A short while later, Allan Arbus made photographs of Diane Arbus on the beach, and these phot6graphs elicited an enthusiastic response from David Nemerov, Diane Arbus's father. Nemerov, the owner of Russek's department store, then suggested that Allan and Diane begin work as commercial photographers for his store. At approximately the same time, Diana took her first short course in photography from Berenice Abbot, a noted documentation of New York City. Except for this course, Diane, as well as Allan, were largely self-taught as technicians. Allan showed a great deal of darkroom aptitude, however, and during their ensuing commercial partnership he did the photographing and technical investigations into printing and developing techniques.
