Abstract

Serum and parotid fluid 17-OHCS measurements were carried out on 6 healthy young adult males during a control week and during a second week in which single-dose dexamethasone tests were performed. There were no significant differences in steroid means for either fluid during the control week. At 8 hr after dexamethasone dosage the serum steroid mean decreased by 84.6% and the decrease in parotid fluid concentration was 76.6%. The highly significant suppression of the level of 17-OHCS in serum was proportionately reflected in the steroid response in parotid fluid. These results suggest that parotid fluid steroid measurements might well be substituted for serum determinations and reinforce previous observations in this regard.
