Firm-level perception of uncertainty and overseas investment: evidence from China's listed firms
  • Nov 23, 2022
  • International Journal of Emerging Markets
  • Chao He + 2 more

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to provide a textual approach to quantify the perception of uncertainty from management side and investigate how firms manage their overseas investment dynamics when perceiving an increase in economic policy uncertainty (EPU).Design/methodology/approachUsing a textual analysis approach, the study evaluates firm-level perception of EPU. Based on the data from China's listed firms between 2007 and 2018, it examines the association between firm-level perception of EPU and overseas investment using probit model and fixed effects regression with robust standard error adjusted for heteroscedasticity and clustered by firm.FindingsThe study finds that the level of EPU perceived by individual firms is heterogeneous. Moreover, it finds that firm-level perception of EPU is positively associated with firms' overseas investment. When perceiving an increase in EPU, firms are more likely to invest abroad and their overseas investment is more diverse. Further analysis shows that the positive association between firm-level perception of EPU and overseas investment is weaker in firms with higher financing cost, investment irreversibility and management incentive but stronger in firms with more intensive industry competition. However, it does not find significant difference in the impact of firm-level perception of EPU on overseas investment of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and non-state-owned enterprises (non-SOEs). The results are robust to using alternative measures of primary variables and to endogeneity concerns.Research limitations/implicationsFirst, although the data on outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) at the national and provincial levels are comprehensive, the data on OFDI at the firm level are still relatively scarce. As the firm-level OFDI data become available, future study could be extended to OFDI flow. Second, future study could use other information disclosed by firms to evaluate their perception of EPU from host countries and examine the impact of bilateral EPU on overseas investment. Third, by evaluating firm-level perception of uncertainty in terms of a particular type of economic policies, such as fiscal policy, monetary policy, trade policy and foreign investment policy, future study could probe the sources of EPU affecting firms' overseas investment.Practical implicationsFirst, although uncertainty increases the volatility of firms' investment activities, firms can recognize and seize investment opportunities in an uncertain economic environment and make profits through resource integration. Second, as the association between firm-level perception of EPU and overseas investment depends on firm and industry characteristics, firms with higher financing cost, investment irreversibility and management incentive should be more cautious when making overseas investment decisions during uncertainty times. Third, governments should increase the transparency and the stability of their economic policies to help firms plan their investment policies.Originality/valueThe study extends the literature related to EPU measurement by constructing a firm-level perception index of EPU based on firms' annual reports using a textual analysis approach. Moreover, it sheds some light on the mechanism of how firms modulate their overseas investment activities under uncertainty.

ObjectiveBuilding upon information quality assessment frameworks and social exchange theory, this study quantifies online doctor–patient communication quality across three dimensions using text analytics methods. Focusing on gynecological cancers online consultations, we examine how communication quality affects patient choice and satisfaction, while simultaneously investigating the moderating roles of service price and doctor engagement.MethodsThis study collected 19,392 doctor–patient interaction records from a leading Chinese online health platform through web crawling. Employing an interdisciplinary methodology integrating natural language processing, machine learning, and sentiment analysis for variable measurement, this study conducted empirical analyses using multivariate linear regression models.ResultsThe study reveals that all three communication quality dimensions (thematic similarity, terminological similarity, and emotional expression similarity) exert significant positive effects on both patient choice and satisfaction. Furthermore, online service price and doctor engagement are found to positively moderate the relationship between communication quality and doctor performance, suggesting that higher-priced services and more engaged doctors amplify the beneficial impact of quality communication.ConclusionsThis research contributes to the theoretical understanding of doctor–patient communication in digital healthcare by extending existing frameworks and providing robust empirical evidence. The findings offer new insights into the mechanisms underlying online medical interactions and present fresh perspectives for optimizing communication models. From a practical standpoint, the study provides actionable recommendations for platform operators, including the implementation of targeted communication training programs for doctors to enhance their ability to deliver relevant and comprehensible information, as well as the development of terminology conversion systems to facilitate patient understanding of medical jargon, thereby improving overall communication quality.

Designing an Open Innovation Model Based on Sustainable Ethical Behaviors Using Textual Content Analysis Approach
  • Jan 1, 2024
  • Management Strategies and Engineering Sciences
  • Seyyedeh Elham Hosseini + 3 more

Given the unrestricted nature of knowledge in today's world and the dissolution of rigid boundaries between organizations and even countries, the concept of closed innovation has been replaced by open innovation. Organizations are transitioning from closed innovation to open innovation, which represents one of the most complex stages of the innovation process. Sustainable business ethics is considered a crucial issue for organizations, and the lack of recognition of its related indicators can lead to negative consequences in society. The present study aims to design an open innovation model based on sustainable ethical behaviors using a textual content analysis approach. Accordingly, 45 domestic articles and 77 international articles were utilized. Based on the content analysis approach, the identified factors include individual factors with six criteria (respectful behavior, honesty, conscientiousness, benevolence, prudent behavior, and knowledge sharing), organizational factors with six criteria (meritocracy, support, workplace spirituality, informed decision-making, fair evaluation, and excellence), and environmental factors with five criteria (law compliance, technology, scholarly interaction, supportiveness, and trust). These factors collectively contribute to open innovation based on sustainable ethical behaviors.

Using BERT-Based Textual Analysis to Design a Smarter Classroom Mode for Computer Teaching in Higher Education Institutions
  • Oct 4, 2023
  • International Journal of Emerging Technologies in Learning (iJET)
  • Zhe Xu + 1 more

Smarter teaching has been widely popularized in computer teaching in higher education institutions as a key part of modern education. However, this practice faces some problems, such as excessive learning content, a tight teaching schedule, low learning enthusiasm among students, and limited time for practice. These shortcomings can be addressed by incorporating smarter teaching. A computer course in an engineering college was taken as an example in this study to construct a new mode for computer teaching based on deep learning theory, which includes five teaching stages, namely: introduction of new knowledge, pre-testing of knowledge, discussion of knowledge, task-oriented training, and post-testing of knowledge. An intelligent test database was constructed for computer teaching to be carried out under the guidance of the bidirectional encoder representation from transformers (BERT)-based textual analysis approach. Results show that (1) the test database constructed using the BERT-based textual analysis approach is more scientific and effective than other databases. (2) When validated on relevant teaching information and materials, the proposed approach improves students’ learning enthusiasm, problem-solving ability, and practicing capability. (3) The smarter teaching mode constructed based on deep learning theory can significantly improve the quality of course teaching and enhance students’ professional skills. The conclusions provide necessary technical support for the construction of computer-targeted test databases, which are conducive to pushing the reform and development of smarter teaching in computer science.

Identifying Facets of Reader-Generated Online Reviews of Children’s Books Based on a Textual Analysis Approach
  • Jul 1, 2020
  • The Library Quarterly
  • Yunseon Choi + 1 more

With the increasing popularity of social media, online reviews have become one of the primary information sources for book selection. Prior studies have analyzed online reviews, mostly in the domain of business. However, little research has examined the content of online book reviews of children’s books. Book reviews generated by book readers contain different aspects of information, such as opinions, feedback, or emotional responses, from the perspectives of readers. This study explores what aspects of the books are addressed in readers’ reviews, and then it intends to identify categorical features or facets of online book reviews of children’s books. We employed a textual analysis approach including the latent Dirichlet allocation topic modeling to analyze the content of book reviews. The results indicate that online book reviews exhibit different facets of the books, which can be used as access points by potential readers to help them select relevant books.

Online Consumer Reviews on Hearing Health Care Services: A Textual Analysis Approach to Examine Psychologically Meaningful Language Dimensions.
  • Jul 23, 2021
  • American Journal of Audiology
  • Vinaya Manchaiah + 2 more

Purpose The study examined psychologically meaningful language dimensions (i.e., social and emotional dimensions, health dimensions, and personal concerns) within online consumer reviews on hearing health care services using an automated textual analysis approach. Method Nine thousand six hundred twenty-two consumer reviews of hearing health care services, including an open-ended question (i.e., free text response to the prompt "share details of your own experience at this place") and an overall rating (on a 5-point scale ranging from "very good" to "very poor") were extracted from Google.com from 40 different cities across the United States. In addition, some metadata about the cities (i.e., region, population size, median age, percentage of older adults) were also recorded. Text responses were analyzed using the automated Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count software for selected language dimensions. The language dimensions of online hearing health care reviews were descriptively compared with language dimensions observed in the natural language of typical bloggers. Language dimensions from free text responses were correlated with quantitative overall experience ratings. Results Automated linguistic analysis showed that consumer reviews on hearing health care services had higher social processes, positive emotions, hearing, health, money, and work, and lower negative emotions and time-awareness when compared to typical bloggers. Examining the association between overall experience rating and the language dimensions revealed two broad findings. First, higher engagement of consumers in terms of social processes, positive emotions, hearing, and work dimensions was related to higher experience ratings. Second, higher engagement of consumers in terms of negative emotions, time awareness, and money was related to lower experience ratings. Conclusions Online reviews contain information about various dimensions (i.e., social and emotional dimensions as well as personal concerns) that have bearing toward the way in that they rate their health care experiences. Automated linguistic analysis of consumer reviews appears helpful in identifying gaps in service delivery that may influence consumer experience.

The Determinants of InformationWeek 500 Selection and Its Implications: A Textual Analysis Approach
  • Oct 21, 2021
  • Journal of Information Systems
  • Rajiv D Banker + 2 more

This paper uses textual analysis to examine the determinants and information content of the InformationWeek 500 survey (IW500). Grounded in accounting and information systems literature and using textual analysis, we use forward-looking financial text-based measures of firms' business prospects as proxies of firm characteristics that are likely to be associated with IW500 selection. As IW500 selection is a common proxy for IT capability, to advance our understanding of IT capability, we also investigate the implications of the IW500 and its determinants on firm outcomes. Our results indicate that firms' forward-looking business prospects are determinants of IW500 selection. Moreover, after controlling for known determinants of IW500 selection, we find that IW500 selection continues to explain firm outcomes. Our findings suggest that firms' business prospects are important in realizing positive financial outcomes from IT capability and provide new evidence of the information content of the IW500 survey as an IT capability proxy.

Patients’ Perceptions of Health Related Quality of Life in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Chronic Low Back Pain
  • Feb 1, 2006
  • Quality of Life Research
  • Montserrat Núñez + 5 more

To determine how health related quality of life (HRQL) is perceived by patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and chronic low back pain (CLBP) using a textual analysis approach. Two-hundred and forty-eight outpatients (85% female), mean age 58+/-13 years (40% RA and 60% CLBP). Observational descriptive study. Sociodemographic and clinical variables were determined. A questionnaire was designed which included an open question "What does health related quality of life mean to you." which patients answered in writing. Textual data analysis was performed using a previous described method based on multivariate descriptive statistical methods. The two groups were homogenous with respect to gender, educational level, disease duration, comorbid conditions and global functional status. Patients with RA and CLBP used clearly differentiated terms to describe HRQL (RA: to be able (capable), house; CLBP: life, health, quality). RA patients were specific and primarily concerned with functional status and CLBP patients with health and life. The most characteristic phrase used by RA patients was: "to be able to do housework" and for CLBP: "health is the most important thing for quality of life." In the factorial representation, the two pathologies were markedly separated. A series of characteristic answers on HRQL may be identified in patients with RA and CLBP, showing that they have different perceptions about what HRQL is according to their pathology. The use of open questions in a group of homogenous patients with specific pathologies could result in more disease-specific responses. Textual statistical analysis of open questions may provide more information than standard methods, and may be considered as valid for the analysis of subjective issues such as quality of life.

  • Lalu Narulloh + 1 more

Currently the media is shifting to the era of new media (new media), one form of new media is social media. Social media has many platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and the one that currently has the most users is the social media tiktok. At the beginning of its appearance, TikTok was blocked by the Ministry of Communication and Information in 2018, but since the block was opened by the Ministry of Communication and Information with the terms and conditions that apply, TikTok has become the most downloaded social media application. Tiktok is currently also used as a means of creativity and a medium for conveying messages and also preaching. Related to this, the problem of this research is how da'wah messages are conveyed on social media tiktok. As for this study, the researcher chose Ustadz Syamsudin Nur Ahmad's tiktok account, namely @SyamTheCEO as the research object. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research method with a textual analysis approach that aims to explore, interpret, and at the same time deconstruct the ideology, values, or interests that are behind a media text in the da'wah messages contained in the tiktok content of Ustadz Syamsudin Nur Ahmad on his tiktok account based on the logic of textual analysis (denotation, connotation, myth). The results of this study explain the contents of the message of the propagation of aqidah, namely faith in Allah and faith in Qada and Qadar, namely believing in and having faith in Allah and believing in the decrees of Allah SWT's destiny. The contents of the moral da'wah message explained are morals to Allah and morals to humans. The contents of the preaching of worship messages explained are about the laws relating to the pillars of Islam provisions, laws and conditions in carrying out worship in the month of Dzulhijjah and the virtues of worship in the month of Dzulhijjah.

  • Jul 16, 2024
  • Problems and Perspectives in Management
  • M Elfan Kaukab

Companies try to survive and gain competitive advantage by leveraging their innovation capabilities, which need to be more accurately measured through company annual reports to provide valuable insights for investors and stakeholders. The study aims to analyze how innovation capability can be understood using innovative textual analysis based on linguistic cues to assess the level of a company’s innovation capability using secondary data from companies’ annual reports and then validated by empirical tests. The study surveyed 30 companies listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange from various sectors and industries and applied panel data regression with a five-year time series (2018–2022). Innovation capability was an independent variable, measured by textual analysis approach, and return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) were dependent variables. Descriptive statistics showed no significant differences in innovation capability, ROA, and ROE across sectors. Correlation analysis revealed no significant association between company age and these variables. Panel data regression confirmed that innovation capability positively influences ROA (p-value 0.078) and ROE (p-value 0.035). Notably, the impact of innovation capability on ROA increased during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting its growing importance in financial performance during challenging times.

Strategy Typology and Cost Structure: A Textual Analysis Approach
  • Apr 24, 2024
  • Production and Operations Management
  • Rajiv D Banker + 3 more

This study investigates the impact of firms’ strategic positioning on cost structure. Using textual analysis based on 10-K filings, we capture business strategy along three dimensions: product leadership, customer intimacy, and operational excellence. Firms pursuing the product leadership strategy emphasize innovation and confront high congestion risk caused by rapid growth. We find that these firms display a more rigid cost structure by incurring higher strategic fixed investments in R&D and choosing higher committed capacity to reduce congestion risk. We also document that firms following the other two strategies on average exhibit a less rigid cost structure. This is possibly because customer-intimate firms tend to invest in specialized resources in small chunks and take on-demand inputs to tailor offerings, while operational-excellence firms may adopt real options and flexible models to achieve production efficiency and mitigate default risk. Our results are robust to using a difference-in-difference approach based on a quasinatural shock caused by the Inevitable Disclosure Doctrine adoption and a change analysis based on firms’ internal strategic shifts. Our findings suggest that organizational strategy has a significant impact on firms’ resource commitments and capacity choices.

Cross-Cultural Evidence on Tax Disclosures in CSR Reports – A Textual Analysis Approach
  • Jan 11, 2019
  • SSRN Electronic Journal
  • Inga Hardeck + 3 more

This study examines how dimensions of culture influence variations in views about the link between corporate tax payments and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Using textual analysis and a newly-developed set of keywords unique to a tax setting, we analyze 4,438 CSR reports from 24 countries, which is the largest sample that has been analyzed in a tax context. We find significant variation across countries in whether and how often tax is mentioned and whether corporate tax payments and CSR are discussed as complements or substitutes. Using Hofstede’s (2001) framework of cultural dimensions, we find cross-cultural variations in the relevance placed on tax in CSR reports. Further, firms in certain cultures are more likely to highlight their tax paid as a contribution to tax revenue or point out their socially responsible tax practices (complements) while others tend to criticize the tax system or their tax burden (substitutes).

English-medium instruction (EMI) teachers as ‘curriculum makers’ in Chinese higher education: a textual analysis
  • Apr 22, 2022
  • Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development
  • Rui Yuan + 3 more

Drawing upon a collection of curriculum proposals and reflections and informed by a textual analysis approach, this study investigated how 234 university teachers planned to enact and reform their English-medium instruction courses (n = 66) in an English as a foreign language (EFL) university context. Results reveal that the teachers tend to adopt a student-centered teaching approach with a focus on content learning. Teacher collaboration and technology use were two facilitative factors for EMI curriculum operation in different disciplines. In addition, the teachers attempted to evaluate and reform their courses through multiple paths including internet survey, material analysis, and classroom-based research. On the other hand, the study also identifies some challenges encountered by the teachers in their EMI curriculum development, namely, a lack of language awareness, limited cross-disciplinary collaboration, and relatively low level of professional development. Based on the research findings, practical implications are provided to enhance EMI teaching and teacher education in EFL tertiary institutions.
