Abstract

A pneumatic four-shot pellet injector had been in use for the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute Tokamak-60 (JT-60), contributing to plasma studies in 1988. It could propel the pellets up to 1.6 km/s at a propellant gas pressure of 50 bar. IN 1989, a new gun assembly was installed in the upgraded system to provide higher performance and reliability. The supply pressure of the propellant gas is to be raised to 100 bar to obtain a higher pellet velocity of up to 2.3 km/s. The device is now in use in the JT-60 and is expected to contribute to further plasma studies. The features and performance of the device are outlined. >
