Abstract

The research goal is to analyze ways of effective use of underground space in St. Petersburg’ city centre. The point of a special concern here is the safety of pedestrian ways and parking sites. The research provides an example of a reconstruction project which solves this particular kind of issues. The author presents and analyses various approaches to solving public transportation system's challenges by developing the underground space of St. Petersburg. Cars parked regardless of the traffic rules provoke road and transport incidents. Moreover, they narrow carriageway up to the exctinction of the traffic lane itself. World's practice shows that underground parking has become very common. The terms “off-street” and “underground” parking became synonyms. In this research various kinds of off-street parking are depicted. It also provides the statistical data on the underground structures, nearby pedestrian and transportation traffic which‘s been collected and analyzed through the expert evaluation. It also demonstrates the need to solve the transportation and urban planning problems in close connection with the underground space development plan.
