Ecosystem learning in secondary education often relies on theoretical instruction with minimal contextual engagement, leading to persistent misconceptions and low student understanding. This study aims to address this pedagogical gap by developing the Riverkeeper game, an innovative hybrid learning media that combines digital platforms (Canva, Wordwall, and Google Docs) with field exploration activities to support ecosystem instruction. Using a modified 4D development model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate) but only Define, Design and Develop stages were conducted in this paper. Data were collected from five biology teachers and twenty Grade 11 students to identify instructional challenges and needs. The Riverkeeper game was designed based on constructivist and experiential learning principles, integrating digital problem-solving tasks with real-world observation of river ecosystems. The media prototype underwent expert validation involving three evaluators (a biology education lecturer, a media expert, and a senior high school biology teacher) using a structured instrument covering three aspects: game guidance, visual communication and design, and functionality. Validation results showed an overall score of 88% (very valid), with strengths in instructional clarity and visual design, though minor revisions were suggested for navigation and technical integration. A practicality test involving twenty students reported high satisfaction and relevance to learning objectives. As this study focused solely on the development and validation stages, further research is recommended to evaluate the game’s effectiveness in improving student learning outcomes. The Riverkeeper game presents a novel approach to ecosystem education by integrating digital game-based learning with direct environmental exploration.

  • Alessandra Cacciato

This paper examines the integration of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) and Data-Driven Learning (DDL) in secondary education through Learniamo, a mobile-only web application developed by the author to support corpus-based learning. The project assesses the potential of mobile DDL to foster language development beyond the classroom, drawing on quantitative and qualitative evidence to analyse students’ engagement with the app, the extent of their participation, the effects of mobile DDL on targeted linguistic outcomes, and the strategies they employed when interacting with corpus data. The study adopts a quasi-experimental design involving 44 students from two French high schools enrolled in the EsaBac programme, which targets B2 proficiency in Italian. Over a two-month period, participants used the app autonomously to complement classroom learning, and data were collected through pre- and post-tests, usage logs, questionnaires, and focus group interviews. Usage logs showed steady engagement, with pre-constructed corpus-based activities being the most frequently accessed feature, followed by open corpus searches. The largest proficiency gains were observed among lower-intermediate learners, with smaller but positive improvements at higher levels. Search queries revealed interest in grammatical constructions, collocations, literary forms, and curriculum-related vocabulary. Findings highlight the potential of mobile DDL as a complementary mode of language learning in secondary education, despite the need for technical refinements.

  • Yu Chen

The progress of science and technology and the rapid development of the Internet have made the visual communication design full of unprecedented yearning and passion for the new scientific and technological civilization. This research mainly discusses the visual communication design under 5G technology. For the fifth generation mobile communication technology (5G), its brand new network architecture design can provide 10 to 20 times higher peak rate, millisecond-level network transmission delay, and 100 billion device-level network connectivity than 4G. It will open up a new era of extensive interconnection of all things and deep human-computer interaction for human society. This paper starts with the relationship between visual communication and various media, so as to prove that the development of mobile media will be inevitable, especially in environment, the visual expression and the innovation in design style. In order to reflect the inner will of the audience in the environment of rapid development of information, this article. It analyzes the changes brought by the development of mobile media to the visual communication design at this stage, predicts the development trend of visual communication, and tries to point out that the development of 5G communication technology is bringing a new round of revolution to the design industry. As a design researcher, it should pay attention to the impact of technological changes on the design field. By exploring suitable design methods, the application of visual communication in mobile media under 5G technology conditions can be better realized. Starting from the background of the evolution and development of media, this paper analyzes the reasons for the rise of 5G technology, as well as the characteristics of 5G technology and its advantages in communication. At the same time, it deeply analyzes the connotation and involved fields of visual communication design and expounds the promotion and influence of the reform of media technology. It focuses on analyzing the development level of 5G technology and the new thinking brought by visual communication design. The article also puts forward the origin of the research. 58.1% of the evaluators were satisfied with the impact of 5G technology on visual communication. Visual design, interaction design, and usability design are all indispensable factors in interface design. When designing, they are not designed in isolation from each other but interact with each other. When carrying out any one of the designs, the design influence of the other two should be combined, and the changes of each one should affect the design of the other two. For example, interaction design and usability issues must be considered when determining the visual presentation of an interface. It can be seen that the design process of the interface is a comprehensive design process. This research helps to advance the development of visual communication design in the future.

  • Roksoliana Kvasnytsia

Іn situations where information and its accessibility determine the success of emergency response, and every second and detail can affect the outcomes of crisis actions, visual design becomes a vital tool for effective communication and risk reduction. Theoretical foundations and practical aspects of visual design for emergencies, particularly its role and effectiveness in communication during crisis events, have been analyzed. General scientific methods such as analysis and synthesis, empirical, systemic, historical, and comparative approaches, as well as specific research methods including artistic analysis and visual-graphic methods, have been applied. For the first time, the design of visual communications for military emergencies has been comprehensively studied. Key stages of visual design development, its functions, and factors contributing to risk reduction and increased public awareness have been identified. It has been established that the design of visual communications for emergencies is a process of creating integrated systems for effective public information before, during, and after an emergency. Three stages of visual design formation have been identified in accordance with the classification of four phases of disaster management actions: preventive, active, and reactive, each with specific tasks and approaches. Visual design has been confirmed to fulfill informational, educational, communicative, emotional, aesthetic, and cultural functions. Key factors in risk reduction include awareness and education, inclusivity and accessibility of information, cultural adaptation, and motivation to act. In extreme conditions, visual design should ensure the accessibility and rapid perception of information through clear, intuitive, and concise graphic language. Future scientific research may focus on the in-depth study of the impact of visual design on psychological and behavioral reactions of the population during emergencies (of a military nature). This will include the development and testing of specific visual solutions for different types of crisis events, analysis of their effectiveness in real conditions, as well as the integration of new technologies and approaches to improve communication and reduce risks. Creating the discipline "Visual Communications Design for Emergencies" and its implementation in higher education in Ukraine is a strategically important step for training qualified professionals and integrating Ukrainian experience into the global context.

  • Sep 14, 2020
  • Journal of Public Administration and Governance
  • Lazaro Alman Kisumbe + 1 more

This paper intended to examine the effects of the language of instruction on Learning in secondary education in Dodoma region, and its implications in the preparation of the country's workforce. A total of 288 form one students at Ipala and Hombolo secondary schools were purposely and conveniently selected into the study. Standard seven past papers including geography, history, and civics were used as model papers to test the effects of the Language of instruction in students' learning. The same examination was conducted to the same group in each school administered in English and later in the Kiswahili language. A Paired sample t-test (dependent t-test) for paired samples was used to compare means of correlated samples and to test the null hypothesis that "there is no significant difference between the sample means". Each sample from the population was measured twice. It was revealed that the students' scores in the examination differed due to the difference in the language of instructions. The scores in grade-wise revealed the poor performance of the examination in English when compared with the same examination in the Kiswahili language. We found that the use of the English language inhibits the understanding of the subject and limits the rooms for active involvement in training and learning, which is a prerequisite for understanding. Thus, it affects the efforts to prepare the future workforce to propel the realization of education policy and its contribution to the Tanzania National Development Vision 2025. We recommend designing operational strategies for implementation of the National Education and Training Policy, 2014 that directs the use of Kiswahili as the instructional language in all levels of education in the country.

The impacts of remote learning in secondary education during the pandemic in Brazil
  • May 26, 2022
  • Nature Human Behaviour
  • Guilherme Lichand + 3 more

The transition to remote learning in the context of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) might have led to dramatic setbacks in education. Taking advantage of the fact that São Paulo State featured in-person classes for most of the first school quarter of 2020 but not thereafter, we estimate the effects of remote learning in secondary education using a differences-in-differences strategy that contrasts variation in students’ outcomes across different school quarters, before and during the pandemic. We also estimate intention-to-treat effects of reopening schools in the pandemic through a triple-differences strategy, contrasting changes in educational outcomes across municipalities and grades that resumed in-person classes or not over the last school quarter in 2020. We find that, under remote learning, dropout risk increased by 365% while test scores decreased by 0.32 s.d., as if students had only learned 27.5% of the in-person equivalent. Partially resuming in-person classes increased test scores by 20% relative to the control group.

Transformative deep learning in secondary education: the 3P framework for inclusive and sustainable knowledge development
  • Oct 2, 2025
  • Priviet Social Sciences Journal
  • Efendi Hidayatullah

This study explores the potential of the 3P (Precise, Process, Product) framework to incorporate the principles of transformative and deep learning in secondary education. This research addresses the urgent need for meaningful, reflective, and student-centered learning to tackle the complex challenges of the 21st century. A qualitative case study was conducted at a secondary school using purposive sampling of curriculum coordinators, teachers, and policymakers. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and observation of classes. Thematic analysis, supported by NVivo 12 software, showed that the Precise component helps formulate clear and focused learning objectives; the Process component encourages reflective dialogue, active participation, and an inclusive learning environment; and the Product component fosters authentic, project-based assessment practices. The findings indicate that the 3P framework has shifted learning from exam-centered methods to an emphasis on deep understanding, inclusivity, and global citizenship. Challenges included gaps in teacher training, low digital literacy, and unequal access, while solutions emerged at the teacher, school, and policy levels. The framework proved to be versatile and effective, enhancing students’ learning identity and social awareness, and aligning curriculum standards with classroom practice. This study offers a conceptual contribution to curriculum transformation by presenting an adaptive and sustainable pedagogical model that supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on inclusive and quality education.

Mapping inequality in access to meaningful learning in secondary education in Ethiopia: implications for sustainable development
  • Sep 5, 2018
  • Educational Studies
  • Ahmed Y Ahmed + 3 more

ABSTRACTThe rapid expansion of primary education in Ethiopia has enabled most children to attend primary education—or at least to start schooling. This expansion, however, is largely “symbolic” rather than “substantive” where “substantive” refers to access that generates meaningful learning. The article explores spatial inequality in access to meaningful learning in secondary education in Ethiopia with a particular focus on the Amhara region, and addresses the question: Is substantive learning equitably distributed? To operationalise this question, “access-to-learning” is conceptualised using a new method of constructing a learning-oriented measure of educational quality that combines grade survival (access) and test score (quality). Moreover, the “zones of exclusion” framework has been used to see the systematic loss of students from the education system at different points in time. Using GIS tools, the extent of spatial inequality in access-to-learning was determined by mapping the proportion of students who achieved the required level of performance, and geographical variation in the distribution of inequality factors. The paper concludes with implications for educational policy and planning and recommendations for further research.

Visual Communication Learning Through Peer Design Critiques: Engineering Communication Across Divisions
  • Jul 8, 2015
  • Alyssa Taylor + 1 more

Visual Communication Learning through Peer Design Critiques: Engineering Communication Across Divisions Engineering communication by necessity concerns visual communication. As educators, we hopeto instill students with a sense that good visual communication must be thoughtfully designed tohelp readers make meaning of data. Such visual design for readers requires our students tobecome metacognitive of their own experience as consumers of visual communication. Yet oftenengineering students are not prompted to think about or design visual data communication untilthey must present their own data, typically as part of a senior capstone project. Our students’ lackof experience leaves them without a solid foundation for critical thought about figures, and thusscant preparation to learn from the experience of creating and refining them. If capstones are tobe an opportunity to learn about visual communication rather than simply perform it, students arein need of a swift means to gain perspective on user interactions with figures, starting with theirown.Highly subjective fields such as fine art and graphic design have long had an answer to this needto learn within open-ended yet user-centric visual modes of communication: the group critique,or simply, the “crit”. Though details vary, the “crit” is often a group or class activity wherein onestudent artist presents his or her work and briefly introduces it; the others articulate and discusstheir opinions and viewer experience. Thus the “crit”, if facilitated constructively, provides ameaningful active and social learning opportunity for both the presenter (who gains userexperience data about his or her design) and the critiquers (who develop their aestheticawareness and articulation by reflecting and communicating their experience viewing thedesign). We adapted the concept of the “crit” to a workshop within a bioengineering capstone course inorder to help students to sharpen their awareness of reader experience of figure design, andempower them to improve their own visual communication within their capstone reports. In ourworkshop, students were first guided to articulate opinions and critiques of a series of publishedfigures. Visual design principles (drawn from aesthetics, data visualization design, and our ownreactions to readings of previous capstones) were contextualized within the students’ reactions. The students then broke into small groups in order to apply the newly-uncovered principles in aconstructive critique of each other’s figures. The group reconvened to share interestingobservations with the whole class. We assessed the workshop both by soliciting student feedback through a survey and byevaluating and comparing figures from a sample of student participant capstones to a controlsample from the previous year. We found that students were positively disposed toward theworkshop and found it useful, which matched our qualitative observations in class. We alsofound that completing the workshop was correlated with a reduction in unnecessary filler figures,as well as an improvement in figure professionality and visual storytelling.
