Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the development of leptophos for use on tobacco in Canada. Leptophos and chlorpyrifos were used on tobacco plants in Canada to get rid of dark sided cutworm, which is a serious pest. As an extension of the rye cover crop results, work was initiated to develop recommendations for the control of dark sided cutworms when treatments were applied to the bare soil surface after the rye had been plowed down but before transplanting. Laboratory tests indicated that both leptophos and chlorpyrifos, when applied to moist soil, were effective in controlling the dark sided cutworms. Both products were somewhat inactivated when applied as surface applications to air-dried soil. Results indicated that approximately 83% of the original amount of leptophos applied, dissipated over a 90-day period demonstrating that residue carryover of the material from one year to another would not be a significant factor.
