Abstract

The Pulsed Plasma Thruster (PPT) Space Demonstration Program will characterize the performance of an experimental PPT as an orbit raising propulsion system with a 25% reduction in dry mass and twice the power of the LES 8/9 PPT. The project is a partnership of the USAF Phillips Laboratory and NASA Lewis Research Center. The PPT is manifested on the MightySat II.1 satellite scheduled for launch in January, 2000. An extensive breadboard PPT testing program is underway and data from those tests will be used to finalize the design of the flight version PPT. A plume diagnostic experiment (PDE) will be used to characterize contamination rates and effects on surface thermo-optical properties due to PPT plume contamination. These experiments will then undergo full space qualification testing prior to integration with the MightySat II.1 spacecraft.
