Abstract

This paper describes a tank system that was built to allow students and researchers to study control strategies on a system that is as close as possible to an actual industrial plant. Its instrumentation uses Fieldbus technology and it has five control loops: two temperature control loops, two level control loops and one flow control loop. The physical aspects of the tank system and a multiloop control strategy are discussed in the paper. Some control lab experiments are suggested. The tank system can be used for the study of instrumentation, programmable logic controller and supervisory configuration, adaptive control, distributed control, expert systems, neural systems, fault detection, mathematical modeling, etc.
