Abstract

This paper presents a new dynamic ramp metering control model that consists of four components: state estimation, O-D prediction, local metering control and area-wide metering control . The local feedback control and the area-wide optimal control are integrated together in a hierarchical structure. A new dynamic optimal control model for the area-wide metering control is formulated and solved as a non-linear programming problem. The simulation results show that the bilevel algorithm that combines the local feedback control and the new area-wide dynamic optimal control works best in all tested scenarios.
