Abstract
Abstract Sedco Forex is an International drilling company that has been operating offshore Brazil with both Dynamically Positioning (DP) and conventionally moored semi submersible rigs in drilling, completion and floating production modes for a number of years. A Quality management system based on International Standards Organization (ISO) 9002 Quality Management System Model was introduced for the entire offshore operation and shore based support facilities. Certification was achieved three years ago. This highlighted the advantages of integrating safety management systems within the frame work of a quality management system. This paper will describe the lessons learnt developing the Quality Management System and obtaining ISO 9002 certification and the improvements in safety and rig performance attained as a result of crew involvement in the development of the system. This paper will conclude whether the benefits obtained in such a program versus the investment made is a worthwhile venture towards improving the quality and safety of rig operations.
