Abstract
Developing an Instructor Support System for Scenario-Based TrainingScenario-Based Training (SBT) is an increasingly important technique for the modern military. For instance, the United States Marine Corps fields a Deployable Virtual Training Environment (DVTE), a multi-user laptop-based simulation suite that supports SBT. The DVTE suite is missing a single point of interface where instructors can locate lessons that satisfy training requirements, deploy simulations and monitor trainee progress. An interface point needs to be highly modular, have a clean, intuitive user interface, support multiple instructors and simultaneous exercises, and save training history. An Instructor Support System (ISS) has been developed that enhances SBT for DVTE under the Next-Generation Expeditionary Warfare Intelligent Training (NEW-IT) program. The ISS assists the instructor in several ways: suggesting lessons that satisfy training requirements; configuring laptops and applications; providing near real-time monitoring of trainee progress; and automation allowing the instructor the freedom to directly interact with trainees. The ISS architecture has already enabled three iterations of GUI and functional changes based on usability testing and user feedback with two more rounds planned for the future. The ISS increases training throughput, giving the instructor more time to concentrate on effective Scenario-Based Training.
