Abstract

This article describes a newsletter, Chronic Mental Illness and Aging, designed to encourage excellence in writing and to provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to publish scholarly papers. The papers are based on topics assigned in a Psychology of Aging course. The newsletter is published three times a year and consists of 12 pages (six back to back) in a black and white format. Students are responsible for the layout of the material, word-processing articles, maintaining the mailing list, and sending the issues out. Featured papers consist of up-to-date information on a mental health issue involving elderly persons. The newsletter is sent to mental health professionals who work with elders and who have difficulty in keeping up with current developments in the field. The cost of publishing the newsletter is minimal, less than $150 a year. The only cost factors, presumind duplication services are available, are postage and paper. Suggestions for other gerontological newsletters are provided.
