Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate the detoxification effect of Chlorella vulgaris extract in carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxic Sprague-Dawley rats. Hepatic toxification was evident by hepatic ballooning degeneration, fatty metamorphosis, necrosis, multinuclear cells, and fibrotic changes in histopathological study. Elevated levels of serum aminotransferase and lipids were also observed in these rats. The Chlorella vulgaris extract restored levels of the biochemical markers of the phase I and II detoxification, and hepatic microsomal CYP2B1mRNA with a manner of dose response (p<0.05). We concluded that the Chlorella vulgaris extract is effective in detoxifying carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity. Moreover, the effects seem to be relevant to increases in CYP2B1mRNA, cytochrome P450, NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase, glutathione and glutathione-S-transferase. (Supported by BPRC)
