Abstract

A description is given of a method for the determination of the second derivative of current-voltage characteristics. (§ 2 and § 3). The method is applied to the characteristic of a probe inserted in a Neon discharge tube. With the aid of the formula, deduced by D r u y v e s t e y n 1), the velocity distribution of the electrons in the discharge can be determined. This is done at several points in the discharge. The results are shown in fig. 7; it can be seen how, approaching the positive column from the cathode-side, the velocity distribution changes into a M a z w e l l i a n one.
