Abstract

The global ship recycling industry dismantles average around 1000 large ocean-going vessels per annum. Almost all ship recycling activities are concentrated in five Asian Countries (India, Bangladesh, China, Pakistan and Turkey). About 85% of ship recycling activities held in three south Asian countries. Average 200 in number and 2000000 LDT of different types and sizes of obsolete ships are recycled annually in different yards in Bangladesh. There is average 1833461 MT reusable materials has produced annually from ship recycling industry of Bangladesh. There are few dozen operational ship-recycling yards located along coastal belt at Chittagong of Bangladesh. There is average 17215 MT hazardous waste has produced annually in local yards of Bangladesh. For treatment of waste, incineration is technically sound option, but need high investment cost. On the other hand, land filling is a cheap option for South Asian countries particularly for Bangladesh, but there is always a risk of landfill failure in the long-term. However, future ships will be safer and more environment friendly. So quantity of different HazMat or waste will be reduced at future. At present, few improvements have been observed in some important aspect/field of recycling process and practice in Bangladeshi yards. As a result few Bangladeshi yards have are going to achieve the standard of Statements of Compliance (SoC) with the Hong Kong Convention. This research paper will describe the status and process of ship recycling industry of Bangladesh in brief and determine the average annual re-useable material factor and waste factor of the sector on the basis of real data of different types and sizes of 27 obsoletes ships recycled in local yards which have collected, compiled and analyzed by direct physical involvement of the author since last eight years.
