Abstract

Radiation shielding properties of rubber containing barite (BaSO4) at different concentration were evaluated by using beam transmission method for 59.5 keV energy of 241Am radioactive sources. The linear attenuation coefficients of these materials have been measured using gamma spectrometer which contains NaI(Tl) detector. It was found that the linear attenuation coefficient increase with the increase of barite content up to a value of 25% (in weight). The linear attenuation coefficients were 0.050, 0.086, 0.110, 0.129 and 0.138 mm-1 and the HVL were 13.9, 8.1, 6.3, 5.4 and 5.0 mm for the barite concentration of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% by weight, respectively. The X-ray shielding ability was confirmed by using radiographic technique.
