Abstract

The source of Helicobacter pylori infection in most individuals is unknown; faecal-oral and oral-oral modes of transmission have been suggested. We have shown that under controlled laboratory conditions flies can become colonised with H pylori.1 This suggests that H pylori infection could be acquired from ingestion of food contaminated by fly excreta or by direct contamination of mucosal surfaces by flies. Other investigators have shown with PCR and urease primers2,3 that H pylori DNA may be present in wild houseflies.
