Abstract

Long-term exposure (two years) of male and female B6C3F1 mice to high concentrations (1000 ppm) of methyl chloride resulted in an increased incidence of renal tumours in males only (Batelle Columbus Laboratories, 1981). The question arose, whether this response was due to genetic or epigenetic factors. Alkaline elution was considered a suitable method for the detection of DNA damage which could provide an explanation for the observed sex difference.
