Abstract

Queer archives, though new in India, are well established in countries with vibrant LGBT communities. These usually catalogue books, magazines, articles, photographs, letters, and the like. Some archives do attempt to go beyond the material. Substantial thought and effort goes into the collection and storing of archival material. In this chapter, we talk instead of the design of the queer archive. We discuss the constraints and specificities that affect a queer archive. We explore what the purpose of such an archive would be in the contest of “Queer Archiving = Queer Activism”. This leads to how such an archive can be designed/maintained to serve those aims. We focus on building an “Archive of Feeling” (Ann Cvetkovich). Ongoing archive projects are discussed in this framework, and future paths are delineated, including applying statistics tools to analyse archives and inform activism. We end with caveats around the dangerous practice of queer archiving.
