Abstract

The 13-MeV cyclotron was developed in 2002 by using domestic technologies and installed for the production of short-lived radioisotopes (RIs) at seven regional centers in Korea. It was designed for multipurpose use, but most of the cyclotrons applications is limited to the RI production for medical purposes. In this study, we investigated the possibility of extending the beam line of a 13 MeV cyclotron for basic research. As part of the extension, the construction of a beam line is planned for the proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) and proton-induced gamma-ray emission (PIGE) systems at one of the regional cyclotron centers. We designed a beam line system that provides the beam profile to do the PIXE and PIGE measurements. The beam line has been designed to transfer the proton beam from the cyclotron to a shielded target area with the special care to maintain a low current beam. A description of the beam line, the design criteria with the corresponding simulation results are presented in this paper.
