Abstract

We propose a weakly-coupled trench-assisted M-type fiber supporting five spatial modes for short-haul communication systems across O-band. Numerical simulations are carried out to investigate the influence of design parameters on neff, min∆neff, and Aeff with regions that meet the five-mode condition of the proposed fiber. We also evaluate the differential mode delay between adjacent propagation modes, fiber dispersion and bending loss. Results indicate that the designed fiber can obtain large min∆neff between adjacent spatial modes (~ 0.001). The proposed fiber can simplify or eliminate MIMO-DSP for short-haul MDM communication systems.
