Abstract

A literature survey has revealed a wide area of general interest in methods of waste heat recovery from the electric arc furnace although quantitative information tends to be conflicting. An analysis of test results from BSC arc furnaces has been used to provide a typical pattern of waste heat rejection. This data provided a waste heat rejection of 200 kWh/tonne for a 170 tonne furnace. The waste heat boiler application is discussed in relation to the scrap preheating technique currently under consideration in BSC. Steam usage by the Works is examined and typical steam requirements are identified as a basis for evaluation of the boiler design. The current and future work programme is outlined as a means of obtaining a reliable economic assessment of the application.
