Abstract

The design of output feedback controller for a distillation column which satisfy a sensitivity-reduction criterion is presented in this paper. The control variables of the distillation column are the heating power and the reflux flow rate. The column output is the concentration of the over-head product. The dynamic compensator which is a state observer, to estimate the unmeasured states of the column, is designed to maintain the composition of the overhead product constant not only when the system is subjected to step disturbance in the feed flow rate, but also when small variations in the parameters of the controlled plant occur. Graphs illustrating the predicted output response of the distillation column after implementing the proposed controller are also included.
