Abstract

A receiver structure referred to as equalized maximum likelihood (EML) is proposed to reduce the complexity of the maximum-likelihood sequence detector (MLSD). Performance of EML is evaluated through the bit-error rate (BER) measurement for a magnetic recording channel. EML exhibits 1-dB gain over the conventional partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) for 10/sup -5/ BER.
