Abstract

A magnetic analyzer for nuclear reaction particles has been designed. It is composed of two magnets, which have homogeneous magnetic fields and curved pole boundaries. Such a complex configuration is needed for various requirements in the ion optical properties. The two-directional focusing is approximately achieved. The higher-order term of the horizontal focusing is reduced by a trial and error calculation with a computer. The energy range covers from E max to 0.67 E max. The average energy resolution calculated is less than 1 × 10 −3, when the solid angle is 2.5 × 10 −3 sterad. The vertical magnification is about 2 and the dispersion factor about 6. With these values and other properties, the design is suitable for the detection with an array of multiple detectors. The method of calculation is also described.
