Abstract

A novel design of the superconducting dipole magnet, which superposes two concentric and oppositely titled solenoids with respect to the bore axis, is briefly described. A dipole magnet prototype of 2 T is designed and constructed based on this conception. The prototype magnet consists of four layers tilted solenoids by using a 7-strands NbTi superconducting cable. Its operating current is up to 3 kA. The dipole magnet has the bore diameter of 50 mm and the length of 0.5 m. The detailed magnetic field design by the software of OPERA is presented. The fabrication and test of the magnet prototype are also reported in detail. It finally reaches 71% of the design current when quenched with the central dipole field of 1.42 T.
