Abstract

Serial communication is an economical alternative for computer integration of manufacturing resources. However, there are design and standardization issues which must be addressed, to assure that the serial network is effectively and efficiently developed and utilized. The industrial engineer can perform a vital role in accomplishing these objectives. This paper reports first-hand experience in development of a serial network in a Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) laboratory, and proposes some requirements for design and standardization of serial communications in the CIM environment.
