Abstract

In this work, the comparison of two designs of implantable patch antennas made of different substrates for Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band which is between 2.4–2.48 GHz is presented. The two proposed antennas made of Alumina and Arlon substrates are designed and simulated by using FEKO software. The antenna is designed and its antenna’s performance is studied. The antenna’s performance is studied in two situations, in free space and in phantom where the antenna is embedded under the human skin. The antenna characteristics such as return loss, input impedance, radiation pattern and gain performance were observed in the same band, using different types of substrate materials and in different situations as mentioned earlier. From the simulation results, the antenna performance will be observed to determine which antenna is more suitable to be embedded in human body. The proposed implantable patch antenna is suitable for body communication applications.
