Abstract

In this paper, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is sized, and controlled using MATLAB to reduce the constraints imposed on Hydro Quebec grid by the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine Tunnel by means of peak load reduction. The peak load reduction was attained through peak load shaving by utilizing a BESS, and also through energy and peak load shaving by using BESS in conjunction with Photovoltaics solar cells (PV). The presented analysis highlights the substantial peak load reduction alongside the expected financial benefits. Validating the developed system by simulating the system in National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL) system advisor model (SAM), and HOMER Pro by HOMER Energy shows the potential savings of the developed control.
