Abstract
This paper presents design and analysis of a novel PM-assisted synchronous reluctance machine (PMA-SynRM) with axially integrated magnets, for comprehensively improving machine performance, using a finite element method (FEM). The proposed PMA-SynRM features simple structures with high performance by incorporating the advantages of a SynRM and a surface-mounted PM machine (SPMM). In particular, the rotor parts of the SynRM and SPMM are assembled to make the ‘q-axis’ are located 45° (elec.) from the d-axis. Thus, the magnetic torque and reluctance torque reach the maximum values at the same current phase angle, for efficient production of the total torque. The FEM analysis results demonstrate that the proposed PMA-SynRM has highly increased total torque and power factor, as well as greatly reduced torque ripple, as compared to a conventional PMA-SynRM with the same magnet amounts.
