Abstract

This text intends to search for evidence on the association between household income transformations and migratory fluxes, and it shall start from the following question: Have poor people migrate more or less than others? Trying to answer this question it were compared migration characteristics by income layer and municipality size. It was attempted to develop the analyzes, whenever it was possible, crossing municipalities grouped according to size and population in layers of per capita household income. The cities were divided into five categories (Up to 15 thousand inhabitants, between 15 and 50 thousand inhabitants and more than 50 thousand inhabitants, the metropolitan area of Salvador, and Salvador city); and the population into four divisions of per capita household income (Up to half the minimum wage, between half and one salary, between 1 and 3 salaries, and more than 3 salaries – with a focus on the first group). Unfortunately this analyzes will only go through the years of 1991 and 2000, once the data from 2010 census is not yet available. Furthermore, the chosen state for the development of this study will be Bahia, taking into account the importance that income transfer programs have to the state, and also a history of a high ratio of population loss due to emigration.
