Abstract

This chapter presents an overview on the topos of the miraculous captives: Law and Justice in the light of Olav miracles. It discusses the topos of the captives in the Merovingian hagiography. Numerous reports of miracles of exemptions from captivity can be found in the Merovingian hagiography. The literary topos include social and legal history of complex issues that have been variously accented in different periods and worked narratologically. The chapter discusses the topos of the captives in the 11th and 12th centuries. It presents an overview on the gallows miracle. With the types of the gallows miracle the question of guilt and innocence in the Merovingian period is irrelevant. The chapter discusses the real elements of the Norwegian jurisdiction and literary motifs. A total of seven Olav miracles collect the topos of the miraculous captives in its various facets.
