Abstract

This study is devoted to Bolestaw Lesmian, one of the most well-known Polish poets of Mloda Polska. It explores Lesmian's own concept of nature as exemplified in the love poem Taka cisza w ogrodzie.... An intimate relationship with nature is developed in Lesmian's poem; his portrayal of nature and spiritual order gives shape to an indissoluble unity. With a view to Bergson's philosophy, this work attempts to attribute a sensual way of thinking to Lesmian's nature-oriented poetics. This inquiry into Lesmian's work wishes to show how the poem gives form to a new symbolic potential of nature. Employing the biblical fall from grace as a point of departure, as well as a counterpoint, this poem assigns the apple a will of its own, as well as the role of seducer. The question of whether Paradise is actually lost is answered in new, surprising ways, not without traces of irony and humour.
