Abstract

The production of light hydrocarbon gases by litter of Picea abies was measured by means of gas chromatography. Ethylene was the only gas which occurred in significant concentrations; more than 70% was found in the litter atmosphere. The rate of ethylene production was increased by raising the temperature from 18 to 37°C. Ethylene formation was also correlated with the water content of litter, and was affected by rewetting the air-dried material.
