Abstract

Although its practice requires sacrifice and struggle, sport is essentially a ludic activity by which human beings can cultivate their natural capacities, both corporal and spiritual. Moreover, rightly exercised or contemplated, sport is a great instrument to generate values and virtues of several types. Among them, the present study seeks to emphasize the spiritual or religious values that some documents of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church especially want to highlight. Such values, we seek to connect here with the human search for an ultimate meaning of life and the natural desire for happiness that can only be achieved, it seems, in a transcendent order. Regarding this full happiness, sport would be a kind of sign, foretaste or substitute.
