Abstract

The shift in gas gain at high count rates, due to the effect of a steady ion space charge, has been examined theoretically for both coaxial and multiwire proportional chambers. It is predicted that, under several different conditions, the function −ln(qq0)(qq0), where qq0 is the relative reduced avalanche charge, should be directly proportional to the count rate. Values for the constant of proportionality may be calculated in terms of chamber parameters. The present theoretical formulation should be applicable over a wide range of conditions. The basic assumption of the theory is examined critically in an appendix.
