This study investigates demotivating factors in English language learning among 479 non-English major undergraduate students at a public university in Vietnam, drawing on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as its theoretical framework. A quantitative survey design was employed, using a researcher-developed 23-item questionnaire organized around five SDT-informed factors: lack of autonomy, low perceived competence, lack of relatedness, irrelevance of English to personal goals, and external pressure and amotivation. Descriptive statistics and independent samples t-tests were conducted using SPSS 27. The results indicate that the irrelevance of English to personal goals was the most prominent demotivating factor (M = 4.00), followed by lack of autonomy (M = 3.97) and lack of relatedness (M = 3.79), while low perceived competence (M = 3.02) and external pressure (M = 3.00) were least salient. Gender differences were statistically significant on three factors, with female students reporting higher demotivation related to autonomy, competence, and relatedness, though the difference for relatedness would not survive Bonferroni correction. These findings suggest that curriculum reform to enhance the perceived relevance of English and instructional approaches that support learner autonomy and belonging may help reduce demotivation in compulsory EFL programmes.

Young people are often thought to have a lifestyle focusing on enjoyment, which is why issues related to saving among the youth, especially saving money, receive significant attention from society. This issue has been analyzed in some previous studies; however, there is a new factor that has not been explored in the context of Vietnam, which is future orientation. The purpose of this study is to find out the relationship between future orientation, attitude towards saving and saving intention of generation Z university students in Northern Vietnam. The research method used was the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The primary data was collected from 531 respondents who are currently studying at universities in Northern Vietnam and the data was analyzed by using SPSS and AMOS software. The structural equation modeling (SEM) method was used, and the results indicate that both future orientation and attitude towards saving have a positive impact on savings intention. Furthermore, the mediating role of attitude in the relationship between future orientation and saving intention was confirmed. Therefore, the results should be applied by governmental agencies, financial organizations and individuals, especially young people, to encourage saving intention, and furthermore, saving behavior.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the zombie learner phenomenon in Vietnamese higher education and examines its impact on students’ learning motivation and academic performance. Design/methodology/approach Based on the research model adapted from previous research, which considering “zombie learner” by its manifestations, and consolidating its scales through qualitative studies; using survey data from 999 university students in Vietnam, the authors applied structural equation modeling (SEM) to assess the impact of this phenomenon on academic motivation and performance. Findings The results reveal that the “zombie learner” phenomenon significantly negatively affects students' motivation to learn, which in turn leads to a decline in academic performance. Among the identified characteristics, “lack of autonomy” and “lack of engagement” from classmates have the strongest negative effects on students' motivation. Additionally, academic motivation is shown to have a direct positive impact on learning outcomes. Research limitations/implications The research focuses on university students in Vietnam and reveals the directions for further studies in other contexts. Practical implications This research provides valuable recommendations for educators and academic administrators to foster a more engaging learning environment that encourages participation, thereby mitigating the “zombie learner” effect and improving students' academic performance enhancing teaching quality and student motivation. Originality/value Besides the confirmation of the effect of the existence of zombie learners on motivation and learning outcomes, like other studies, this study adds two controlling variables with the “major” and “tuition fees” on the two dependent variables “learning motivation” and “academic performance.” Studying an attractive major will lead to higher motivation and academic performance. Similarly, having to pay high tuition fees can also be both a motivation and a pressure for students to study, thereby achieving better academic performance.

  • Dieu Linh Nguyen

Vietnam’s education system has made significant efforts to enhance foreign language proficiency, particularly in English, across all levels of training. In recent years, although many educational policies and projects, typically National Foreign Language Project have been promulgated and widely applied, there are still gaps and limitations. One of them is the lack of research on the beliefs and understanding of students who are most deeply affected by the English graduation standard policies. This paper aims to examine non-English major undergraduates’ understanding of the CEFR-V (a Vietnamese version of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and their beliefs about the current implementation of the English proficiency standards to university students in Vietnam. The study collected data from 122 students from a large university in Vietnam. Descriptive statistics indicate that while the participants possess sufficiently positive beliefs about the implementation of the national proficiency standards for undergraduate students, there are still concerns about standardization and differentiation. Additionally, the students are found to have limited knowledge and low usage of the CEFR-V. Thereby, some suggestions were made to improve the foreign language policy and optimize students' learning outcomes.

  • The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Business
  • Lan T N Nguyen + 2 more

This paper investigates the determinants of students' success in Vietnam through conducting online interviews and surveys with 2,500 Vietnamese students at eight famous universities in Vietnam. By applying both SPSS 22 and STATA software, the study is to evaluate the impact of four driver factors, which affect GPA, language efficacy, and personal achievement. These factors are psychological perspective, home environmental, student demographic, and school environmental. The research results emphasize a positive effect of psychological and home-environmental determinants, but the negative effect of school environmental factors on the students' success. Besides, the relationship between demographics and student success was tested and indicated that male students have a better language learning ability, but a low level of academic achievement than female students. The results also point out the impact of religious affiliation and ethnicity on personal achievement. Non-religious students are better achievers than those having a religion or those in minority ethnicity. Moreover, accumulated schooling years are negatively associated with students' success. The more working experience students accrued, the higher possibility they are successful. Finally, the finding provides an insight into students' success that might be useful to government authorities and other universities in designing policies for enhancing the quality of education.

  • Minh Cuong Duong + 3 more

Effective handwashing practices help prevent the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study examined the knowledge, frequency, and characteristics of handwashing practices among Vietnamese university students. An analytic cross-sectional study was conducted on all students enrolling at Phenikaa University in Vietnam. A self-developed questionnaire was used to collect information on the participants' knowledge regarding the effectiveness of handwashing as a COVID-19 preventive measure, the moments for hand hygiene, the most appropriate practices in different situations, and frequency. Among 728 study participants, 460 (63.2%) were from health-related faculties. Almost (97.9%; 713/728) all participants knew that handwashing could protect against the spread of infection, but less than half performed handwashing often in a normal day (47.4%; 345/728), after sneezing or coughing (48.9%; 356/728), and 7.4% (54/728) only washed hands when hands are visibly dirty. Health students used alcohol-based handrub in all situations, including those requiring handwashing with water and soap (P < 0.05). The levels of knowledge regarding the effectiveness of handwashing among study participants are high, but actual practices of handwashing are suboptimal. It is crucial to improve community education to help reinforce correct hand hygiene behaviors, including when to wash hands and which method should be used.

"AUGMENTING MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES THROUGH EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES AND AI: A PATHWAY TO INCLUSIVE EFL CLASSROOMS IN VIETNAM .."
  • Oct 22, 2025

In an effort to address the increasing call for inclusivity in English language education, this paper examines the potential of integrating Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) with educational technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) to support diverse groups of non-English major university students in Vietnam. These learners, who represent a wide range of academic backgrounds, demonstrate significant variation in linguistic competence, learning preferences, and levels of engagement. While MI theory provides a conceptual framework for differentiated instruction, the practical implementation of this approach is often hindered by limited instructional time, rigid curricula, and the pressure of standardised assessments. This paper argues that recent advancements in AI-powered tools, such as intelligent tutoring systems and generative language models, offer new opportunities for teachers to incorporate MI-based differentiation more feasibly and effectively into classroom practice. Drawing on recent empirical studies, it explores how such tools can facilitate personalised learning, reduce teacher workload, and develop critical skills aligned with real-world professional demands. By embedding MI theory within a technology-enhanced pedagogical framework, this paper highlights how inclusivity can be operationalised in tertiary EFL contexts to support equitable access, foster learner autonomy, and promote skill sets relevant to the digital age
