Abstract

Abstract Demodex nycticeii sp. nov. is described, in all life stages, from papule-forming colonies in the skin of the Evening bat, Nycticeius humeralis. The papules, measuring to one mm in diameter and containing many mites, develop following initial invasion by the mites of the hair follicles of the general body fur. Papules are surrounded by multinucleate giant cells and large numbers of leucocytes, the latter especially if mites penetrate through the epithelial lining of the papule into the surrounding dermis. Demodex nycticeii is most similar to D. novazelandica of the New Zealand bat, Mystacina tuberculata, but differs in size, shape of opisthosoma and structure of podosomal shield.
