Abstract

Sixteen 28 to 30 day-old male spraque-Dawley rats were implanted subcutaneously in the thorathic region with demineralized diaphyseal bone matrix powder for inducing heterotopic bone marrow formation. Chondrolysis with vascular invasion was evidenced on day 11. The initial bone marrow development was marked on day 17. With the proliferation of hematopoiesis cells, a well-differentiated bone marrow was presented on day 28 and remained till day 90. We believe that this model is a useful tool for studying the mechanism of bone marrow development. Its potential clinical value in treating diseases of hematopoietic desturbance should be considered. Key words: Bone marrow; hematopoiesis; mutagenicity test; histology.
