Abstract

Aspergillus flavus was grown on blocks of larch wood. Three months after inoculation the dry weight, lignin, carbohydrate and extractives had been reduced to 79, 72, 81 and 52% respectively, of their original values. Blocks became covered with mycelia and electron microscopy showed that vessel elements became detached and cells disintegrated. Infiltration of the fungus into the wood only occurred in the latter stages of degradation.
