The term Deep Learning has become the current issue in educational field all around the globe. Deep learning is true learning, in the sense, that it is enduring, as opposed to shallow or surface learning that tends to be momentary. This term was proposed by Fullan et al. to refer to the process of acquiring the global competencies known as the 6Cs: character, citizenship, collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. These competencies are suitable to prepare students to be confident in encountering globalization challenges. Deep learning is designed based on a new pedagogical model, a learning partnership between and among students and teachers to master of content knowledge, create and use new knowledge in the real world. The focus of teaching is to develop students’ ability to manage their own learning and to do things with their learning. In Indonesian context, Deep Learning is implemented based on a framework consisting of four main components: learning framework, learning experience, learning principle, and graduate profile dimension framework. The learning experience framework includes three aspects: understanding, applying and reflecting. In practice, Deep learning is based on three main learning approaches mindful learning, meaningful learning, and joyful learning.

The Indonesian government has introduced a deep learning approach based on three principles: mindful, meaningful, and joyful learning. This approach is considered essential to address learning challenges by ensuring that education is not only focused on content mastery but also on the application of knowledge in real-life contexts. Learning English as a general course for non-English major university students often faces challenges of low motivation, limited engagement, and lack of perceived relevance. Applying deep learning principles in this context is therefore urgent, as it can help create a more supportive learning atmosphere, enhance student motivation, and strengthen the practical connection between English and students’ real-life needs. This study aims to explore deep learning approach implementation and the impacts for non-English major university students who learn English as general course. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method using a closed-ended questionnaire based on a Likert scale, distributed to 108 students from three different study programs. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, validated by source triangulation. The results show that the majority of students perceived that lecturers successfully applied the principles of mindful (90%), meaningful (96%), and joyful learning (95.6%) in the learning process. Students reported increased focus, emotional engagement, relevance of the material to real-life contexts, and higher learning motivation. These findings indicate that the deep learning approach has a significantly positive impact on the effectiveness of English language learning. However, a small portion of students expressed disagreement, suggesting that there is still room for improvement, particularly regarding lecturer readiness and infrastructure support. Therefore, educator training and capacity building are essential steps to ensure the successful implementation of deep learning.

  • Qun Zhang + 2 more

This study focuses on the impact of learning experience on college students' deep learning of English and the chain-mediated effects of motivation and strategy. In the context of globalization, English is crucial for university students, but traditional teaching models often neglect the role of learning experience in deep learning. Deep learning emphasizes critical understanding, creative application and long-term memory construction, which is particularly important for English learning. Learning experience covers affective, cognitive and behavioral responses, and influences learning attitudes and effects, but there are fewer studies on its impact on college students' deep learning of English and the related mechanisms. In this study, college students of different genders, ages, educational backgrounds and academic achievement levels were selected as samples, and learning experience, motivation, learning strategies and deep learning were comprehensively assessed by well-designed scales and statistically analyzed with the help of SPSS and AMOS software. The results of the study show that learning experience has a significant positive effect on English deep learning, and motivation and learning strategies play an important chain mediating role. Specifically, learning experience enhances motivation, which in turn promotes the use of learning strategies and ultimately improves English deep learning. This study validates for the first time the chain mediation model of "learning experience→learning motivation→learning strategies→deep learning"in the field of English language learning, which provides a new perspective for understanding the intrinsic mechanism of college students' English language learning and enriches related research. In practice, it provides specific guidance for English teaching, and teachers can enhance students' English deep learning by optimizing learning experience, stimulating learning motivation and guiding the use of learning strategies. However, there are some limitations in this study, such as the limited sample scope and the use of a cross-sectional design, etc. Future studies can expand the sample scope, adopt a longitudinal research design, and further explore other potential mediating variables.

A Collaborative Deep and Shallow Semisupervised Learning Framework for Mobile App Classification
  • Feb 14, 2020
  • Mingqi Lv + 3 more

With the rapid growth of mobile Apps, it is necessary to classify the mobile Apps into predefined categories. However, there are two problems that make this task challenging. First, the name of a mobile App is usually short and ambiguous to reflect its real semantic meaning. Second, it is usually difficult to collect adequate labeled samples to train a good classifier when a customized taxonomy of mobile Apps is required. For the first problem, we leverage Web knowledge to enrich the textual information of mobile Apps. For the second problem, the mostly utilized approach is the semisupervised learning, which exploits unlabeled samples in a cotraining scheme. However, how to enhance the diversity between base learners to maximize the power of the cotraining scheme is still an open problem. Aiming at this problem, we exploit totally different machine learning paradigms (i.e., shallow learning and deep learning) to ensure a greater degree of diversity. To this end, this paper proposes Co-DSL, a collaborative deep and shallow semisupervised learning framework, for mobile App classification using only a few labeled samples and a large number of unlabeled samples. The experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of Co-DSL, which could achieve over 85% classification accuracy by using only two labeled samples from each mobile App category.
